Dog-Friendly activities in Oregon

Portland, and the PNW, just wouldn't be itself without Next Adventure. According to stateparks.oregon.gov, the Oregon State Park system serves an estimated 50 million visitors (3rdin the US), and 3 million campers (5th in the US) and is home to 254state parks, with camping available at 53 of those parks, across 122,847acres of land. That's a lot of room for activities! We like to stay busy, and we like to bring our dog Riley with us wherever possible. In the summer,we love hiking and frequent areas along the coast and the Columbia River Gorge. We also picked up a Kayak and a stand up paddle board and enjoy looking for new spots to explore.

Next Adventure's paddle board store is right around the corner from their Portland Grand Avenue store, and they also have a location in Sandy. Additionally, their Scappoose Bay Paddling Center is right on the water making it a great spot for kayaking. Next Adventure is one of those Portland stores that you have to experience, and is part of what makes Portland "so Portland." This isn't like Dick's Sporting Goods - it's got a whole lot more character, and it's a place where you can have fun and relax. You're in good hands at Next Adventure!

Dog-Friendly Hikes

Sandy River Delta- This is a must visit destination. It's basically a massive dog park, most of which is off-leash permitted, on a 1000 acre plot of land just20 minutes from Portland. The massive park contains many miles of trails, open field areas, and plenty of off-leash freedom for your pup.

Neahkahine Mountain– This  coastal-area hike has breathtaking views of the Oregon Coast and Pacific Ocean. We recommend taking a look at this whole area, since it has so many different hikes. For example, our favorite short hike to bring out-of-town guests to is the Elk Flats Trail, which takes you to two breathtaking cliff-side views - and is also where I proposed to my fiance. Just down the road (2 minutes drive) is Short Sands Beach, a wonderful short hike that takes you right to the beach. We love going to the Elk Flat Trails area, then heading to Short Sands Beach, and then to one of the dog-friendly breweries on the Pup Passport along the coast.

Kayaking & Water Activities

Tualatin Park - This is a great spot to drop in your kayak and paddle boards with your pup on the Tualatin River. The river makes for a calm, relaxing, mostly shaded kayaking experience. Tualatin Dog Park is a rock throw away, and Tualatin Park is also right down the street from Stickmen Brewing, a dog-friendly brewery on Pup Passport.

Scappoose Bay- Next Adventure has a great spot where you can rent kayaks and other boats to head out on an adventure with your pup. Experience beautiful, calm, flat water paddling secluded from boat traffic. Paddle through luscious forests while witnessing thriving wildlife in a family friendly setting that caters to all types of boaters, especially beginners.
